I can't see any settings for widgets at all, so I guess that's a no.

If I understand your problem, a workaround solution consists to create a play list and add a rule to get all the "in progress" movie or tv show. And if you use MySQL, it will be synchronized between MrMC/Kodi client.
I personally use it and it's work pretty well.
