Post by Kilyman »

Hi. From yesterday to today audio is not working.

My Appletv was without sound and i have ro reboot. Now mrmc and also kodi 17.1 & 17.3 have no passthough sound only bad noise.

Perhaps over Night the tvos is updated to 10.2.1

Everything else is unchanged.

Solutions?

Can i downgrade?

I just tested my apple tv and DTS and AC3 5.1 passthrough without problem.

At least 5.0 audio output is broken in the latest version.
My audio was set to 5.0 since my subwoofer is broken. In the previous versions of MrMC everything was working fine, in the latest version I get no sound from multi audio channel videos. The menu sounds work fine though.

After setting the MrMC audio output to 5.1, the passthrough sound is working again.

I have the same problem after upgrading to tvOS 11 beta. DTS and Dolby Digital (AC3) surround sound is broken with my Sony Sound bar (2.1 audio) over HDMI if Audio Passthrough is enabled in MrMC. The surround track just plays loud, nasty noise (popping static). The AAC stereo track, however, plays fine. If I disable audio passthrough, the surround sound plays fine with the receiver converting the audio via LPCM.

Is this a tvOS 11 beta bug or something else?

It's the way passthrough is done on these devices, and that's why they removed on the Kodi side in v17 because of situations where you just get horrid sound (and it happens on my sound bar too) like this. I'm guessing something was changed in the tvOS 11 but generally most developers aren't going to do anything with a new tvOS version until at least beta 4 since things change/get broken on the Apple side and then fixed again on the Apple side and a developer would have wasted a lot of time coming up with a workaround.

You're not getting any different sound by not turning passthrough on, so I would recommend you leave it off and just let MrMC decode it and send it as LPCM.

Thanks for the info. I didn't realize that Kodi v. 17 removed the passthrough option.

I was concerned that my receiver, which supports both DTS and Dolby Digital, was giving me lower quality audio with LPCM. Isn't the receiver transcoding the DTS or Dolby Digital track to LPCM with a bit of audio quality loss that usually happens when audio or video is transcoded from one format to another? Or is the transcoding lossless?

It's a lossless process so you're still getting the same audio you would have, except a light saying DTS or Dolby won't light up on the receiver/sound bar. Unless you're trying to get Atmos or DTS:X (which isn't supported on the ATV anyways) you're not missing anything.
