Not yet, mpeg2 (1080i) can be handled with ffmpeg on pretty much all devices we support.
you know I know that. ;) but the deinterlacing stinks and I'm not the only one who's complained about that.
It's definitely not good, reds are always very 'bouncy'

That said I'm definitely looking forward to proper h.264 deinterlacing - it's the no1 thing missing from MrMC for me.
exactly, reds are where you notice it the most often.

Ooh, do tell more!!! Will it still just be doing Bob deinterlacing or something more sophisticated built into mediacodec?

Also, don't forget to test my athletics clip which identified stuttering issues with ffmpeg.

Would also like to know what deinterlacing method is done on the Fire TV 2 within mediacodec (surface)

No hint on that question?

The deinterlacing method used when using MediaCodec(Surface) is unknown. Also there is zero control over it. I guess Google figures that all deinterlacing methods are the same :)

Of course, there is almost no difference between those deinterlacing methods :D

Now only the promised new skin is missing for MrMC ;) :)

Is it a doubler or does it blend?

If it's anything like exoplayer uses with live channels it will work very well.

pretty sure AMC Surface deinterlacer is s a doubler. The reason I think that is...

When I watch 1080i broadcast tv (usa) in MrMC (with ffmpeg2 the decoder) the framerate of the video reported is 29.97. If I watch the same content in SPMC, with AMC Surface decoding, the framerate reported is 59.94.

To my eye that playback on SPMC looks sharper and doesn't have the low quality deinterlacing artifacts I see from ffmpeg2.

However, I would love it if, on high powered devices, film deinterlacing PLUS IVTC were done to bring the framerate to 23.976. Most of the primetime shows are filmed at that rate and then have the 3:2 cadence applied for broadcast.
