Kodi in Apple TV 4?

Post by justdnlx »

Hey Guy,

I don't know if it's allowed to ask here but, I wanna try.

So, there are 2 ways to get kodi on my Apple TV 4, one way is to buy mrmc the other way is to buy a usb-c cable and sideload it.

So my question is, what is the difference between the versions? Can you guys tell me pls? I don't mind buying mrmc, I would love to support the good work, I just wanted to know whats the difference is between the versions

MrMc is not Kodi, it's a fork/refactor of Kodi where python and user addons have been stripped out.

MrMc is upstream for Kodi for the atv4. Kodi devs do backport our changed but they have not been merged into the master branch.

So can you tell me what the difference will be? Will the sideloaded Kodi not running as smooth as mrmc?

I don't really get what I'll miss when I go with mrmc and not the sideloaded Kodi App.

The Kodi version u can sideload, is it exactly like the version for firetv/raspberry Pi that I'm already using? With addons and skins?

MrMC is Jarvis based with AE/player from Krypton and python and user addons have been stripped out.

That's the difference. If you want Kodi, then sideload it. It will be Krypton/master branch based. Krypton/master is in the process of a large and long refactor. There is no version of Kodi besides that one which will run on the ATV4.

Sideloaded apps expire after 90 days (I think?) so you'll need to do the sideloading process all over again. (More detailed answer: Free developer provisioning profiles expire after 90 days vs the 1 year paid devs get. When your signed certificate expires you have to pull a fresh copy of Kodi from Git; recompile; and re-sideload to your Apple TV. If you don't know what this means you should probably just buy MrMC.)

The cost of MrMC is similar to the cost of a USB-C cable, so money wise you are spending the same. However, faulty copies of MrMC will not burn your house down. The same cannot be said for USB-C cables.

My recommendation:
  • If you need Addons you must sideload Kodi
  • If you don't need Addons, just buy MrMC; its worth it for the convenience and the developers deserve some reward for all they do!

works here, it really depends on what you are doing. Seeing mrmc.log (debug enabled) might show more info.

oh, and you should really start a new thread for any issues and not just tag on to some existing thread.

No user installed addons under MrMC but we are much more stable and there is no cert expiration issue.
