MrMc on iPhone with synology

Post by ThoPixPir »

Hi there.
i have been using Kodi on my mac, and OSMC on my raspberry pi2 for a while. i have my files on my synology NAS, and use the SQL on there as well.
i just found MrMC, and i must admit im pretty excited to get this content on my phone!
now. im having some problems setting it all up.
is it possible to set my iPhone up, so i can acces my files through MrMC, even when im not on my home network?
i've thought i should use the FTP server protocol, put in my external IP, and that should be it.. but i can't get it to connect, and i don't know what to write in "remote path" .. I've enabled FTP on my NAS, setup port forwarding on my router, and if i go through safari i can connect with the external ip:5000, ..
anyone have it working on their iPhone, with tips to how i can get it up and running :) ?
thanks in advance!

Can you see the menus? I use two pairs of glasses and still difficult to read them!!!, but if you are positive you typed correctly the small letters, it should work with any protocol. You also should forward the correct ports for the service you need to use on your router, as described in Synology docs.
But I will not recommend forwarding router ports and drilling holes in your firewall.
It is better to setup the VPN server on Synology and connect first through the VPN on your iPhone, than start MrMC. It will act like you are on your own LAN.

My eyes have not deserted me yet, but the menus and letters definitely is small!
Oh, i have never tried setting up a VPN, but it sounds like the Best option, i will look at it!
- thanks :) !

You may want to check out if your router has a built-in VPN option, as it may perform better than Synology's.

My NAS (DS212j) is very, very, very slow for its VPN; when I bought a new Asus router it does VPN as well, but at blazing speed. So the VPN is faster and the NAS is faster because it doesn't have to handle VPN connections anymore. (Plus I'm now using more secure certificate based VPN instead of an IPSec password)

If you have an iPad, you may want to put MrMC on there to get used to the menu layout first. The font is ridiculously small even on an iPhone 6.

I'm actually working on getting SQL set up w/ my MrMC and Synology right now, so here's a few things I've ran into that you may want to be aware of:
  • USE THIS GUIDE: http://kodi.wiki/view/MySQL/Setting_up_MySQL
  • Be absolutely sure to create the new user from the above linked guide! By default the synology 'root' account is localhost only, meaning cilents cannot connect to it. Even if your database is only used for Kodi and doesn't need to be secure, it's still a bad idea to let root be accessed from anywhere else.
  • When MrMC (and Kodi) upgrades major versions, they change MySQL databases as well. This is automatic, but if two different clients w/ two different versions you will see two different libraries. You need to keep all versions updated! Since you're using a hybrid Kodi and MrMC setup, you'll want to pay close attention to the MrMC release notes to make sure you don't go too many versions ahead w/ your Kodi installs
