SMB not working - MrMC Touch/ iOS 14

I need to add a smb2 library to mrmc.
The share is on a ubuntu server and enabled for guest access.
It can be accessed perfectly fine from windows/ OS X / iOS files app etc
However, on mrmc , it does not show up under SMB shares at all
The server does show under Zeroconf browser but asks for a user name/ password (which it shouldn't)
Anyway, entering either guest or a user name for said server keeps going into a loop which makes the entire app kind of useless for me.
Any pointers for troubleshooting?
