I'm on a Fire TV using Emby as my source, and I am able to download Subtitles, and the y work for the current movie, but they aren't getting stored in the movie folder. This works with Kodi, so I'm assuming the permissions are correct. Here is what teh debug log says:

There is no way for us to write to emby server and a folder where movie is... unless you are using SMB/NFS and MrMC library, subtitles will always be saved to temporary location

Thanks for the reply!
Can I continue to use Emby and set up a custom SMB location for the subtitles or will using Emby ALWAYS force temporary subtitles?

You can setup custom SMB location, would need checking if the file will be named properly for the player to pick it up in the future playback.
Like I said, on my to-do list
