Oh, also wanted to mention, any issues playing h265 will be followed up by a sample request There are two possible paths for treating packets provided by our demuxer. All the h265 samples that I have seem to be one flavor, so I am on the look out for samples of the other flavor.

Silly question, what do you mean by "two possible paths for treating packets provided by our demuxer" ?

Do you mean there are two decoding paths for HEVC in tvOS ? I thought that everything goes through VideoToolbox.

What concerns me is how Apple deals with display modes, specially when the ATV 4K is running in "4K DV" or "4K HDR" mode. From what I've read (see the articles on Forbes and The Verge) is that video data written to the frame buffer (coming from apps or the UI) is output in HDR or DV regardless of being SDR, HDR or DV. Apple made the choice to adapt the video to the display mode (so SDR => HDR, HDR => SDR etc).

Imagine MrMC is playing a 1080p SDR movie (e.g. Bluray 1080p "remux" outputting REC709 YUV420). Suppose the ATV 4K is set to 4K DV mode.

Then the ATV 4K will upconvert the video to REC2020, apply ST2804 inverse transfer function etc.. so do a lot of post-processing. Guess this will introduce extra latency and of course make the video look worse.

There is a lot of controversy about this. Unfortunately I don't have a 4K TV yet.

Is there a way you can circumvent this Apple post processing ?

Oh btw.. can MrMc output HDR video ?
