Managed to get a log of a sequence of pause/unpause with frozen image.

When screensaver pops up, we get set inactive but not pushed to background. VTB will get voided during this and when one does play, it creates a new VTB codec, then tried to find the last keyframe played because VTB really, really wants to start with a keyframe. If it can't find one, bad things happen. I suspect this is going on as you get audio but no video. Will need to poke a bit to see if I can keep VTB alive during this situation.

All right, so, in the meantime, it's best to just disable VTB and go with software instead?
On a side note regarding osd timeout, even though you're a bit allergic to it; wouldn't it be sweet with an option, possibly only while in expert mode, to toggle on off disappearing osd and allow the user to choose a timeout of their particular liking?

Build 170502.1744 seems to reasonably play GoPro videos now
It does however seem to come with abnormally long delay prior to the videos starting to play - we are talking in the order of 30 seconds or so of black screen before a 300MB video will start playing
Expected behaviour?

yes, there is something strange with the starting bits of those GoPro videos. The test samples have 7-8 second delays. Would like to see
debuglog of one with longer delays so I can look at the audio offset.
EDIT: Also what file caching are you running, I typically run a 200MB cache and have it set to cache all file access. LibDSM or LibSMBClient ?

Not sure what file cache size - the default likley as I have not knowingly changed it
Changed to Libdsm and tried again - same behaviour, except not black screen waiting, now it waits on the first frame image

Edit: I was sure I had enabled debug logging, but after posting the above info, and going to turn dbugging off, I found it was already off. Below link after I turned it back on (although this time did not reboot);

settings -> system -> internet -> cache size
settings -> system -> internet -> buffer mode

It was the default 20MB buffer size, and buffer all internet
Changed to all files and 200MB, and strangely there seemed to be an even longer startup for playing (but frozen seeing all the files in the directory and the video thumbnail) and the playback was definitley less smooth
Updated to 170503.1539, and enabled debug logging
Same behaviour with 200mb and áll files'caching - long startup and GoPro video stuttering
Changed back to 20mb and internet files caching - Video startup still took a while but this time the first video frame was immediately fullscreen (frozen), and playback was again choppy after about 15 seconds of play time
The longer sample I've been using can be grabbed here;

I tried several hevc media; still stuttering; lip-sync issues without transcoding. With transcoding, smooth video but frequent lip-sync problems. So, still the only way to play hevc correctly on ATV4 is Plex.
