Both APIs that can handle hardware decode are marked 'prohibited' in TVOS. Go figure ? But A8 has some real ponies behind it so we do everything via software decode. Based on our tests, we are not seeing any issues, even with high bitrate h264. I'm waiting on samples from noggin to see what the real issue might be.
Why would you release an STB with an appstore if devs can not use hardware accelerated video decode ? Some decisions from Apple I can't understand
Does this mean there is hope for H.265 as well ? I didn't try it yet...
They are waiting for the next gen set top box probably comming next year

and then they will add siri universal support to that. No more apple for me for awhile bought two new this year.

I think they have some internal confusion. VideoToolBox is marked prohibited in both docs and in Xcode SDK. AVSampleBufferDisplayLayer is marked (new for tvos) in doc but prohibited in Xcode SDK. If you look at other AVSampleBufferDisplayXXX functions like catpure/record/etc, those make sense. I think someone was assigned the task but applied a hammer.
H.265 is a very different store, facetime HAD it but it was removed. Basically H.265 license groups are raping everyone regarding costs and Apple has decided, no way. The costs are really insane. I think H.265 has killed itself because of this high cost of licensing.
