Thanks for the info. You have to pay extra for the shield remote, right? I probably wouldn't use the gaming aspects of the shield, but it might be worth the $ if I can get down to one primary box.

Yep, remote is extra, but my harmony works just fine with it, Other universal remote support may vary. The game pad actually works pretty well and includes the voice searching, if you don't mind it sitting on the coffee table :D

The gaming is pretty darn good though, I don't do much (3 small kids) but great for a few min here/there. Hoping MrMC has full 4k support, SPMC does and I know these guys share a lot of ideas/code.

Shield remote is worth it. It also has volume control for non-passthrough usage. 4K is also supported, as it is for the firetv2 and any other fireOS device that can handle display switching. Shield can do 4k/60fps, firetv2 4k/30fps. Difference is due to flavor of hdmi supported.

You found a trick to switch resolution inside mrmc for shield, or did I just read you wrong? ;)

Shield always runs at 4k native (if connected to 4k display and setup that way). MrMC can run it's gui at 1080p or 4K, the only difference is MrMC GUI resolution. If display refresh switching is enabled, the Shield will honor the refresh rate but at 4K native. So say you have MrMC set to 1080p/60, Shield native is 4k/60. play k4/24, Shield switches to 4k/24. Same thing for MrMC set to 4k/60, Shield will switch to 4k/24.

Shield works different than others like FireTV2 but its GPU is orders of magnitude more powerful. So it can take MrMC 1080p GUI -> 4K rescale hit (internally) without any side effects. So the app thinks it is at 1080p, Shield does the rescale transparently. Generally I set MrMC GUI to be the default 1080p and let the Shield deal with the rest. Play a 4K video, it will play at 4K resolution. No fuss, no mess.

Yeah, I know the gory details, I implemented them ;)

I just hoped you found a way to do resolution change to 4K on demand, like on AFTV2.

Reasons:
- 99% of the vids I play are <= 1080p
- My TV is better at upscaling than the Shield

Let's hope they fix their FW for N...

Shield does not even see resolutions less than 1080p yet the uhdtv can do 720p flavors and I see them under fireOS.

Shield is a bit strange, Set Shield to 1080p, MrMC to 1080p. Play 1080p/24, ask for 1080p/24 and it gives 3840x2160/24, WTF ? On stop, ask for 1080p/60, it gives 3840x2160/60 (double WTF) and if you back out to shield settings, it has changed, 3840x2160/60 now.

They do have something strange going on in firmware for sure. Basically they need to honor what the app asks for when it does a display switch.

You have to reboot after switching from/to 1080p/4k or shield returns bs to apps.

One of the "peculiarities" (read bugs) of their fw ;)

Also don't forget there's a bunch of shield workarounds in the egl code...

grr, forgot I was still running the beta 3.3 on the shield. Installed the real 3.3 and grr, things are different :)
