By native do you mean hardware decoded H.264? Looks like the tvOS SDK removed the VideoToolbox framework that enables it, at least as a public API.davilla wrote:For version 1.0, the aim is native (no transcode), stable local server/file playback and MrMC in the Apple App Store for iOS/TVOS.
1. No user installed addons are supported, python or otherwise.
2. No, they really are not supported.
3. They are not coming back
4. Read from 1. again

That is correct, VideoToolbox framework is not permitted in tvOS. We are doing something differentClementB wrote:By native do you mean hardware decoded H.264? At least for me this sounds like all i need, a player that can play whatever i have shared on my home network with a subtitle support.
The only thing i could ask for is the support of playing .rar-archives.
Keep up the good work!

rar-archives hit the chopping block because it made quite a mess inside the codebase. It will see a return in a future version. Once v1.0 is out, then we will open up a 'Feature Request" section in the forum to see what users really need and want.MarkusSwe wrote:At least for me this sounds like all i need, a player that can play whatever i have shared on my home network with a subtitle support.

I think this is right approach. You need "everything" only on HTPC, where kodi is a single guy in the wild.
On things like tvos and android boxes - they are media boxes on its own, with plenty of apps for different things, and, some of the apps provide better use than kodi add-ones and it is logical to have single interface to the apps, which is tvos home screen. There is one thing where kodi doesn't really have alternative and shine, this is playing content from network, any protocol , almost any content, with media-database, subs, trailers etc.
and I believe this must be main function. For most of other use-cases, there will be eventually special apps, which do job better.
When I started to use xbmc on fire-tv, after many years of HTPC approach, I also had tendency to have it all in xbmc. But after year I ended up with only vide-playback from sever with all bells and whistles of kodi. Everything else I use - I do with android apps. Those just better in many cases. Specialized for single task. You can think of them as android plugins
And kodi never going to be main guy anymore. Because a lot of things nowadays can't be done as plugins. Netflix, HBO, showtime. I hardly can imaging somebody using NHL gamecenter plugin on tvos, when native NHL app is smooth
The same with many other things .

Thanks for all the hard work and keeping everyone informed!
All I really want is the ability to play videos off the share I set up on my Mac. From what I've read, it looks like this is one of the basic features to be included in the first version, correct? Will it support SMB and AFP shares?

AFP is dead, even Apple has killed it off. SMB/NFS/FTP/SFTP are 1st targets and unfortunately (unless we get a swift ponking by Apple) SMB support will not include smbX which is what Apple now uses since they moved away from project samba (the GPLv3 kiss of death). BUT smbX support is in the cards for the next version, we are just trying to get the kraken out so features are frozenjabohn wrote:Thanks for all the hard work and keeping everyone informed!

SMBUp works well to restore traditional SMB support for Apple OSX platforms.

Perfect, as this was my setup to play to my ATV1 with XBMC. When you get Apple's SMB choice working then I'll gladly use that instead!davilla wrote: SMBUp works well to restore traditional SMB support for Apple OSX platforms.
