dd if=infile.mkv of=outfile.mkv bs=60000000 count=1

That will cut the 1st 60MBs -> outfile.mkv. Replace infile.mkv with your filename.

Thank you.

Where should I post it?

This is why I need a tutorial. I had no idea you could just cut the video using dd. I thought you needed some program that knew all about the file structure, codecs, etc. Pruning shears rather than a machete….

Some media containers can be cut with dd, some not. mkv is one that can.

So, is there any clue in the video fragment that I posted that would indicate why I have to use 2.1 channels for that video but 5.1 works for everything else?

Sample plays fine with 7.1 or 5.1 channels (both passthrough). Amp show multi-channel PCM and it's getting 5.1 channels.

Same behavior on FireTV2.

I have two ATV4s here at my house. It plays fine on one using 5.1. On the other, the voice channel (center?) is missing with 5.1 but present with 2.0.

Please remember that I wasn't asking for a solution to the problem but for a source I could look at to explain why it doesn't work.

The ATV where it works: HDMI from ATV to TV and HDMI ARC from TV to sound bar.

The ATV where it doesn't work: HDMI from ATV to TV and optical cable from TV to ancient Yamaha receiver.

It doesn't help me at all for you to tell me that it works at your house. It doesn't work at my house and I want to understand why.

I know how to fix it. I don't know why the fix works.

My guess is optical won't pass anything but 2ch pcm, DTS, and AC3. This is EAC3. So something has to transcode it from EAC3 to AC3 and that something is messing up the channel mapping.
