The 20Mbps HEVC Jellyfish test played smoothly, so I don't think you'd have a problem upgrading to tvOS 11 and using MrMC when Davilla/Amet start working on it. tvOS 11/macOS 10.13 is next week, so I'd expect they'll be working on it after MrMC 3.1 is pushed.

Without Plex transcoding enabled?! I cannot reproduce that; sorry!

It was with tvOS 11 and an app that supports the new HEVC decoding. Just showing that it's possible.

I see some misunderstanding has been induced through the short replies.
Whatever, I hope you are right; it won't take long to find out!

I suspect that 1080p HEVC (higher bit rates) will not have an issue under tvOS11 on the ATV4. While FFMpeg does use neon, it is not the most optimal implementation.

I would expect that Apple's sw implementation of HEVC would perform much better. Plus under videotoolbox, frames would be decoded direct to ioSurfaces and this would skip one copy of the frame plus upload to GPU as a gles texture. This step saves some CPU/neon time. Seeing the positive results of other Apps that have taken the tvOS11 HEVC step, this is a very safe bet.

But 4k HEVC would still be difficult under the ATV4's A8. This is where the new ATV5 would shine. I suspect that Apple 'could' do hw decode on ATV4 but since it can only display 1080p, there's not much reason for it plus they need something to promote the move to ATV5s :)

If what you suspect turns out to be a fact, it would considerably prolong the life time of ATV4. My personal attitude, however, is that tvOS 11 is such a big step that deserves an updated HW to utilise its full capabilities, especially taking into account that Apple TV was actually never in the focus of Apple (but just a hobby). ATV5 is the first serious product in this line; definitely on the top priority for me, because I don't want to start watching a movie and worry about the codec or bit-rate or resolution. My personal preference is to "freeze" a working system OS/HW (used to do this with my mac) and start fresh with the latest system OS/HW. May be then I can retire my Minix U1 box and use only ATV5.

I couldn't have peace of mind until I try it out :)
So, I updated my tvOS to 11 beta 10 today (since it is not my primary device anyway) and downloaded infuse 5.5.2.
Yes, it can now play Jellyfish, HEVC, 10bit, 20Mbps but I would not call it "smooth", compared to Plex or Minix U1. So, it seems that this is about the highest limit; but it exceeded my expectations. The Sopranos, HEVC, 10bit, 3Mbps plays smoothly which it didn't before. So, it is definitely an big improvement!

MrMC plays well also, without changing any audio settings, but as expected, no HEVC playback improvement yet.
PlayerXtreme, Plex, DS Video (Synology), Squire, VLC, Kodi 17.4 all work fine.

Conclusion, tvOS 11 does indeed offer better SW HEVC support.

5.5.3 (currently beta) has the most recent changes relevant to iOS 11.

What I’m really looking forward to is the new ATV5 :)
