HEVC 10 Bit x265 Playback Buffering

Post by joelpref » 02 Dec 2016, 15:56

Not a normal file by any means but i just thought i would throw everything at MrMC that i could. Just testing some 77GB files (HEVC 10Bit x265) and didnt expect them to play perfectly. With hardware acceleration (2.8) , i do get a lot of buffering. Attached is an image showing a screengrab from info, and wondering how this is handled. I believe my network can keep up , running AC with Gb backend and utilization sits around 80Mb/s. Not expecting miracles here, just thought i would throw it out there as a challenge. Player is top notch and looking at the forums tells me the team is committed.

HEVC is too CPU intensive for the apple tv at 1080p and those bit rates. And, Videotoolbox only supports h264 so it's not helping with h265.

Officially only supports h264 :) We will see what happens when my OCD takes hold.

thanks for the quick responses team, just figured, even though 1080p officially is the capacity of the appletv, some of will still collect a few x265 along the way , as hopefully next gen is 4K. and maybe Apple can open up their api to true hardware acceleration instead of holding it for themselves.

Separate from MrMC, HEVC is in limbo and looks like it will end up like DivX back in the day, ironically it was some of the same MPEG LA member companies that torpedoed DivX becoming the early internet streaming codec who did the exact same thing to HEVC.

Apple was all in on HEVC but it's IP & licensing fragmentation means it's dead as an internet streaming codec and Apple backed away now sitting on the fence. There's no way Apple can ignore the Alliance for Open Media and their AV1 codec which is intended to replace H.264/H.265/VP9 as everyone in the tech industry who matters bar Apple is a member. Even broadcasters like the BBC have joined up to the AoM as well.

HEVC hardware support being present in future Apple mobile derived hardware is definitely up in the air.

quite interesting. doing a bit of research and there are quite a few strong players in the "alliance" . Doesnt mean apple will fold, as they seem to cut their own path. see what happens i guess. thanks for the background.

Any media provider that's streaming 4k is using HEVC currently. Many devices (roku, fire tv) and computer GPU support by hardware HEVC.

So, I don't see why you think it'll be going away.

But, we shall see. Just like beta vs VHS and blu-ray vs hd-dvd, the porn industry will probably determine the winner.

I noticed that Infuse can play HEVC without effort. Are they using a different codec?
