ATV4 does not have nor will ever have hw (GPU) decoding of HEVC. The A8 SoC will not get it. Best is a highly optimized arm64/neon implementation.

ATV5 will have hw decoding.

I also believe so! Therefore, I will leave my ATV4 at tvOS 10.3.

Edit: will MrMC touch have HEVC HW decoding?

" Infuse announced they support the new HEVC stuff in tvOS11 already."
The last post I found on infuse's forum, from Aug. 31st, 2017, says that HEVC "improvements" will come with tvOS 11. Nothing was mentioned about HW decoding.

It's not hardware on ATV4, but it works. Everybody will be taking advantage of it, including MrMC, I'm sure. Why not?

Why would you not upgrade to tvOS 11?

Why would you leave it at 10.3 just because the ATV4 will never have HW decoding? It *will* get a lot better SW decoding of HEVC, so it'd be better to update. There's no reason not to update to tvOS/iOS 11.

Because we have to wait 9 more days to see the ATV5 that'll have HW decoding.

Of course if all my apps run under tvOS 11 and it offers "some" performance improvement, I will update but it is rather unlikely because I don't know what could drastically change in tvOS 11 to enhance HEVC software decoding on ATV4 to the degree that I don't need to worry about the sampling rate or get annoyed by stuttering, etc.; the A8 is not that powerful anyway. For me, for now, either HW decoding (MINIX U1), or Plex for HEVC.
In addition, I'm planning to get ATV5, so, there is no compelling reason to update ATV4.

If I understood you correctly, infuse statement regarding HEVC "improvements" applies to tvOS 11 hardware decoding on ATV5.

Thanks for the info.

The old ABC player plays HEVC on ATV4 best, other players perform more or less similarly. The HEVC on ATV4 discussion is a long one, multi-facetted but all branches meet at the hardware, specifically the A8.
As for infuse, I bought infuse 4.3.6 Pro and I was left out in the rain after few months; I don't want to bring the infuse discussion here again, but I am not going back to infuse as a matter of principle despite the nice interface (borrowed from -if not exactly- the Synology Video Station, BTW).

As for tvOS 11, I lean to what davilla says "we shall see"; but I can only repeat, you can give an old horse Nike shoes, he might run better but is still the same horse (A8); I'd rather change the horse :)

You're missing the point of the infuse discussion. It's that they've updated and HEVC plays back well. I'm not at all saying you should use infuse. I'm just saying HEVC will be possible on the ATV4 in tvOS11.

@cosmoxl, may be ... but what astonishes me is that old ($2) ABC player is the best for HEVC on ATV4; The Sopranos in 1080p, 3Mbps, plays flawlessly with no other direct player I know matching its performance. The point I am making is, it is obviously possible to play HEVC on ATV4 up to 1080p with a certain low rate, but not higher, due to the hardware limitations.
TvOS 11 might stretch the limit a little but I doubt one will ever have a reliable HEVC player on this platform. With reliable, I mean, e.g. 1080p, 10-20 Mbps (would be fine for me, for some time to come) without stuttering, pixilation or lost frames.
