No talk about audio though, so doubtful it'll be any different than now.

Disappointing. But, they aren't going into details but only trying to appeal to the usual user. We will have to wait for details to be released.

Same place it is now most likely. You can get DTS passthrough, but not DTS-HD MA passthrough, but that only really matters for object based formats like Atmos and DTS-X.

really frustrating that apple remains 2 years behind competitors.

Still it is disappointing your support 4K HDR (DV & HDR10) via a HDMI 2.0a interface, but in terms of audio codecs:

HE-AAC (V1), AAC (up to 320 Kbps), protected AAC (from iTunes Store), MP3 (up to 320 Kbps), MP3 VBR, Apple Lossless, FLAC, AIFF, and WAV; AC-3 (Dolby Digital 5.1) and E-AC-3 (Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 surround sound)

vs.

So no change at all !!

Though I'm not sure if any of the streaming providers (Netflix, Amazon) has plans to roll out Atmos or DTS-X in the (near) future.

Still it's encouraging that the new model can do:

H.264/HEVC SDR video up to 2160p, 60 fps, Main/Main 10 profile
HEVC Dolby Vision (Profile 5)/HDR10 (Main 10 profile) up to 2160p

So HEVC main 10 up to 4K is supported in HW (?). Together with tvOS 11 hardware decoding should be possible in MrMMC.

My understanding is that out of Vudu, Netflix, Amazon at least some of them stream Atmos metadata via the DD+ stream. But, this requires bitstream which the ATV4 and ATV4k won't do.

Not 100% correct, ATV can do bitstreaming, but you're limited to the formats tvOS supports:

- 5.1 PCM, though looks like 7.1 is possible based on Apple specs
- DTS, DD, DD+ (E-AC3)

Apple has never supported DTS-HD and TrueHD in all those years. Looks like they didn't change their mind.

Oh btw... ATV4 (the current one) now supports HEVC / H.265. Guess tvOS 11 is the reason:

HEVC SDR up to 1080p, 30 fps, Main/Main 10 profile

So hardware decoding of 1080p is possible, though you're limited to 30 fps.

Hopefully MrMMC can make use of tvOS 11 hardware decoding soon.
