Mysql vs emby vs plex

I’m using MrMC on this and ios. currently playing media from mysql. how does performance compare to playing from an emby or plex server?

i’m not interested to use emby or plex native clients (but stay with mrmc). curious what server is best performing (artwork caching, display of library, etc).

If it’s all on your local network you will see no performance gains. Plex/emby might be easier to modify thumbs and organize the videos as it has access via webui where you can do all customization but MySQL is simpler to maintain as it only needs MrMC (and MySQL server)... try them all, see what works best for you

I wouldn't anticipate any improvement playing movies as you rightfully say that my network setup is the bottleneck here. Actually, this part is fast and smooth anyways.

My question is around display of the library. My current issue in my mysql setup is that it takes quite a while to show the movie library list and even more to show the artwork. I was thinking / hoping that different databases have different efficiencies how to make the info available to MrMC?

images and library display is relatively fast on my side on mysql, plex is about the same.. can't really tell.

mysql server and plex/emby setups are on Qnap and on 1gb LAN, even after all the work we have done on Plex and Emby, I prefer to have my main setup on MySql and plex is dedicated for testing and for my daughters videos as I can control what she watches due to the better parental controls.

Got it, thanks! I believe my issue is a very large library. What I struggle with mysql is that the library itself shows up at reasonable speed, but it then takes around one minute for it to display artwork properly. The issue is related to MrMC/Kodi scanning all movies upon pulling up the library list. This is independent whether the artwork is locally cached. The "issue" exists for Kodi for many years, but is seen as part of mysql implementation. So, I was hoping that it may be better with other centralized databases?

difficult to say from my side as I don't have large database(700 movies and 100+ tvshows) but if you have NAS, setting up Plex should be easy and would give you a good comparison. there are many factors involved and it varies on every network setup. are you on 1gb LAN? hows latency on your network/setup?

only benefit I can think you might have is that Plex setup would use http protocol where Mysql setup would be smb/nfs , which on your setup might(or might not) be slower

Need to check whether I am on 1GB, but somehow doubt this is my main issue as playing movies is fast and butter smooth. I never have any issue either at high bit rates and never have any form of buffering. It's just library list display for the first minute of pulling up the list.

Let me give Plex a try. Somehow, I have been hesitating as I have been loyal to XBMC/Kodi since 2000 in the Xbox days. At the same time, I would still keep Kodi and MrMC, so doesn't hurt to give it a try.

Plex doing all the scanning on the backend is great since you won’t have to wait for MrMC to scan new things in before you watch it. Like @amet said too managing the posters/info for each is a lot easier with Plex since you can quickly choose the artwork you want, change the title/sort title/etc to match what you want. Then you get the playback quality of MrMC, which is leaps and bounds over the Plex client.

I actually like how Kodi does the scanning. It may not be as easy as Plex, but I have more control and I like keeping local artwork, which Kodi nicely supports with "export library". Also, Kodi identifies my movies better. For example, Plex cannot identify movies such as [REC} as they include [] and also doesn't support to display the original title. Emby does some of this good as well, but I really find the Kodi way the best for me (on-top of my loyalty after using it for 15+ years).

What is driving me crazy though is that it takes around 60-90sec for the artwork to show snappy when pulling up the movie list. This is due to my large library size and also the relatively low performance of my ATV.

I'll test whether this issue can be overcome with Plex. It should indeed be easy to setup and give it a shot.

Maybe time to update to an AppleTV 4K, it's cpu has some real pony power.
