Edit - tried it and I do not see the read ahead buffer caching ahead like it would do in Kodi, I don't think it works the same way it was in Kodi using the advancesetting.xml
yep, you're right! that is a desirable feature.

caching of the entire video file to disk, or until disk space runs out. then the cache is cleared when playback is aborted or ends. this is the behavior in Kodi at least.

I was checking to see if the movie would cache more by turning the seting to zero. When I click the center button on the shield remote it shows the progress of the movie and I did not see the grey color on the playback bar that would represent the read ahead buffer.

some skins don't show that.

curl -X POST -H "Content-Type: application/json" -d '{"jsonrpc":"2.0","method":"Input.ShowCodec","id":1}' http://192.168.2.74:8080/jsonrpc

or https://wiki.mrmc.tv/index.php?title=Codec_Info

and of course debuglog might show more info too

ah, you're right! surprising the skins don't accurately show the cache!

just an anecdote: if your library is updating, it seems like sometimes the forward buffer never fills up. the percentage will get to 100% but the actual data counter never increases.

I've switched to using the Plex client in MrMC and don't have this issue since the library doesn't need to update.
