Issue WIth SDR Movies

Post by SapoMalo » 21 Apr 2018, 22:09

Hi everyone.

First post and starting with an issue btw... well sorry

I discovered an issue tonight with latest version of MRMC, 3.6.1, a weird one...

I will try to explain as best as I can, but do not exactly how.

Basically, if I try to play a non HDR movie (I have tried 1080 and lower)
I do not get the correct colors, for example yellow will look orange (black
playback menus are displayed as orange as well) and blue will turn into purple,
while HDR movies are displayed correctly.

But this only when my AVR, a Marantz SR7010, is on, because it does not happen
when is off, in passthrough mode only.

Weird because it was ok with 3.6.0, it is ok with SPMC and I have not changed any settings anywhere.

Any suggestions on how to fix it?

Thanks in advance.

Luca

Err... Super bizarre...
What is the shield resolution?
Is resolution switching enabled?

All I can think of is the avr not supporting bt2020 correctly...

OP says "HDR movies are displayed correctly" Could the colors described be simply a colorspace mismatch?

Anyway, @SapoMalo, the Shield doesn't switch colorspace automatically and you might like watching non HDR material in bt709 better. :) Currently that means you have to manually switch colorspace depending on the material you want to watch. Pray Oreo comes quickly.

3840x2160 @59,94 YUV 420 10 bit Rec. 2020 (Nvidia suggested settings) and yes resolution switching is enabled.

There is something in how MrMC sends the colour space info to my AVR when is on, that is different from SPMC, because this issue does not happen with SPMC.

Btw, to had more weirdness, doing some tests, I have discovered, that if I manually set the colour space to 709, the issue does not happen, mostly because, when I turn my AVR, on the Nvidia Shield automatically (?!?) switches colour space to 2020 and displays the colours correctly and furthermore, reverts it back to 709 when I turn the AVR off... .

I'll leave and live with 709, not a problem, but that's weird indeed...

Smells like an handshaking issue between the Shield and the AVR.

Did you test w/o resolution switching?

Assuming you used SPMC16, that the only thing I see that would only be in MrMC 3.6.1.
It was in SPMC 17alpha, though.

Yes, disabling resolution switch did the trick too.
(AVR was doing the upscaling to the tv).

Looks like the AVR upscaler has an issue with this option.

Thanks!

If you don't mind, just one last question: what is better,
set 709, and leave the nvidia auto turn 2020 with avr on
or disable AVR upscaler set 2020 and let the tv (LG Oled C7) do the upscaling?

Thanks for the help again!

I'm not Koying but if it were me I'd disable any video manipulation in the AVR.
