H.265 on tvOS 11.0

Post by timstephens24 »

Interesting...

New in tvOS 11.0 - Support for High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC).
High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) is a new standard for video encoding that offers substantially better compression than H.264 at the same level of visual quality.
Use AV Foundation to playback movies containing HEVC encoded tracks, and to export videos.
VideoToolbox clients can encode and decode HEVC video bitstreams.

A few questions, please...

If I have an ATV but don't have a 4K TV yet, would I see any benefit to HEVC or H. 265?
Could 1080p files offer higher bitrate? Smaller file size?

In the future, how might 4K h265 files sizes compare with today's 1080 p?

Thanks!

You'd (theoretically) get a higher quality stream at the same bitrate, or the same quality at a much smaller bitrate.

Yeah, I think Netflix has shown a 40-50% decrease in size for using HEVC vice AVC at the same resolution and quality.

Really depends on the bitrate (and quality) of the file in question. You can keep the same size but get better quality, or go smaller size for the same quality. Apple said it'll be about half the size for the same quality (I think).

So, does anybody know if HEVC will be available on the ATV4, or is this just in preparation for an ATV5?

That's for the ATV4. People have said it was there, it just wasn't available to developers but will be in tvOS 11.

judging by the WWDC , hw only on A9+ SoC’s, atv4 is an A8

we will need to setup separate dev rigs for tvOS 11 as thats heavy beta, but its something we will definitely look into.

I just installed MrMC 3.0.6 (latest TestFlight) on my iPad Air 2; starts, logs in Plex, collects the data, but doesn’t play,
P.S. do you think iOS 11 beta deserves a separate thread?
