Increase in tvOS app size to 4GB

Post by lippythelog » 13 Jan 2017, 23:57

Hello all, new to the site but not using MrMc on Apple TV.

Love the software - easy to use and a great WAF !

Just been reading about Apple increasing the tvOS application size limit from 200mb to 4GB to bring it in to line with other iOS devices.

I had read in the MrMc forums previously about the 200mb application cap size meaning there were restrictions on MrMc workings.

With tvOS app cap size now been raised to 4GB what does this mean for the developers and application improvements going forward for the apple TV MrMc application?

Keep up the good work :)

Hi,

Not sure where you read that there were limitations due to the size... only thing we worried about was adding a new skin, now that's not a problem anymore

Hi

That was probably the app size limitation item i had been reading about - but good to hear the increase in app size helps with adding skins etc.

Love the work and will keep spreading the word to friends who get an apple tv or other set top box which is supported to buy the app :)

Yes, the previous 200mb application cap was a concern. We know that users want more skins but two things that stood in our way.

1) Very small size of persistent storage. If we move to downloadable skin repos, there is not enough persistent storage to keep them. So the potential to have the skin revert to MrMC skin would be present if tvOS decided to purge the storage cache (which it does do at times). MrMC could re-fetch the skin BUT that depends on a network connect to our repo servers and if the net was down, then you have an unpleasant user experience of getting bounced back to the default skin. Defiantly this would be a WTF? moment which is not good.

2) 200MBs is tiny :) We were already close to that limit. Now with that limit removed, we could include more skin choices.
