Is the Fire TV 3 at least then capable of doing proper refresh rate switching? Could someone test that please?

It can but due to the display bug, you would need to set fireOS to 1080p and that would prevent display switching as this needs fireOS set to auto.

Thanks for the reply, but what if I use it with a 1080p TV only, will it work then when being set to auto (which should result in 1080p@60Hz)?
