Washed out colors

Post by Tgxcorporation » 20 Dec 2017, 23:02

Hi,

I’m experiencing washed out colors if deinterlacing is enabled.
If I disable deinterlacing colors are ok but video is obviously choppy for missing frames.

My current settings:
Atv 4K 1080p 50hz - full range tv - 0-255

Video toolbox acceleration on
Video toolbox for 4K off
Avfoundation on

Is there something I’m missing?

Thanks

Tgx

This is probably using ffmpeg because it's interlaced material. Yes, the darks become grays. Another user has reported this with some of the deinterlacers, and I've noticed it as well. Only the yadif deinterlacers (deinterlace and deinterlace half) don't exhibit the problem. But, the ATV4 doesn't have the power to do yadif for HD material. :(

verified, ffmepg based deinterlacers (deinterlace and deinterlace half) are correct.

The others deinterlacers ( GLES shader based ) are not working right with respect to color range.

The AppleTV 4K can use the ffmpeg (sw) based ones. The AppleTV 4 must use the shader based ones as it does not have the ponies to do yadif.

I've just tried to completely disable hardware decoding but when enabling deinterlacing, no matter which type, the blacks get gray and colors are washed out.

Thanks

It's not dependent on hardware decoding, interlaced content on the AppleTV 4/4K will always get vectored to ffmpeg for decoding.

Ok, so there’s nothing I can do... :-(

Can this issue be addressed in future?

Thanks

Perhaps you're seeing an overall levels problem. Toy around with using the limited color range in system video settings? When using AVFoundation you're probably accustomed to seeing proper levels. It is not controlled by the limited or full setting, nor do you have brightness or contrast adjustments for it. However, when watching mpeg2 and/or interlaced content it'll use ffmpeg, not AVFoundation.

Nothing right now, this will get hit 1st thing in testflight for 3.4.1. Just setting up for it now.

I've spent all the morning in trying every possible combination... always the same,
The only thing I can do is playing with brightness and contrast for interlaced videos, but it should be done manually every time I play one. In fact making it a permanent setting for every kind of video, would not make it work for non interlaced content...

Thanks
