HVEC stuttering on v3.3 Apple TV 4

Post by robvnet » 04 Dec 2017, 11:20

Hi, I'm finding HVEC files are stuttering during playback on the latest MrMC build v3.3 on my Apple TV 4. The videos play fine for the first 30 or so seconds, then they start stuttering badly.

This was an issue in 3.1 but was resolved in 3.2 with HVEC playing back beautifully.

Any ideas on how to resolve this?

Thanks
Rob

Finally, unrelated but another issue I've found in 3.3 is that the interface stretches bigger than my TV size so I've had to re-adjust the overscan settings on a couple of occasions.

MrMC 3.3-0 on an AppleTV4 (TVOS 11.1)

Well, 1st thing is a Frame rate of 24.390 fps is just wrong. That matches no known video frame rate I know.
I also doubt that the original source is 10bit. The people creating it just have no clue what the are doing.

DEBUG: OutputPicture - change configuration. 1920x1080. framerate: 24.39. format: BYPASS
DEBUG: UpdateFrameRateTracking: detected new fps(23.976024) at frame(4)

We see eventually see the right frame rate but AVFoundation will have it wrong internally.

More disturbing is the flood of:

Code: Select all

21:16:37 T:7260467904 DEBUG: -[MainController displayLinkTick:]: displayRate = 59.949345
21:16:37 T:7260467904 DEBUG: -[MainController displayLinkTick:]: displayRate = 60.090134
21:16:37 T:7260467904 DEBUG: -[MainController displayLinkTick:]: displayRate = 59.790585
21:16:37 T:7260467904 DEBUG: -[MainController displayLinkTick:]: displayRate = 60.086525
This value comes from DisplayLink duration which should be rock solid stable. For '60Hz' it should be something like 59.94005994005994 or 1001/60000.

With the display rate wandering around, I would not doubt there would be stuttering.

Are you in the USA or elsewhere. What is the TV standard frame rate ? 60 or 50 ?

Let's get you into Testflight for v3.3.1 and see if that makes any difference.

ok, displayRate spew is AppleTv4 related. Normal behavior for it. An upcoming testflight v3.3.1 will have it silenced.

I've rechecked some reference HEVC content I use. Rock solid and very smooth playback on the AppleTV4 (tvOS 11.2GM)

Thanks for the detailed response :)

I'm in Australia.

Regarding issues with the way the video files are created, I can confirm they worked perfectly in 3.2.
So 3.2 was able to handle this where as 3.3 is struggling to do so :?

I've installed 3.3-1 via Testflight. Unfortunately is has the exact same stutter issues.

in settings -> video -> videotoolbox -> enabled HEVC HDR content. Turn this on to vector to VideoToolBox codec.

Ok, I've just tried the latest build without enabling this setting and the affected HEVC videos are playing back beautifully again.

Issue resolved for now :)

Thanks again for your responsive support!
