User-centric instead of Media-centric UI

Post by Everbrave »

The short form: the title says it all; think of Netflix!

The longer version: IMHO, an UI based on the media category (Movies, TV Shows, etc.) is not only boring but also obsolet in times where AI, data-mining, clustering and feature-extraction algorithms are well exploited, also in streaming services. Features like, media type, Genere, rating, time (release, consumption, addition), persons (actors, director, etc) are employed separately as “filters”. This one-dimensional classification scheme can be extended to a user specific, multi-dimensional one based on his/her media consumption habits. A simple case is the “Because you watched/added ...” suggestions.
Such a user-centric will not only put MrMC ahead of the competition but also increase the distance to the Kodi/xbmc origin and might end the discussion about skins.

Investing in such a UI is certainly a good investment towards future proof, user satisfaction development.

Thanks for listening :)

I hate hate hate the netflix UI.

It's my own content. I don't need suggestions on what to watch.

Obviously, no one can argue about emotions. The suggestions come from your own content and are induced on your own habits, i.e., your free-will is always present. You probably also hate self-driving cars but this does not prevent their development and if you decides once to ride one, you will drive to your own destination on an optimised route, perhaps also safer, but you are still the pilot. If you want, you can still choose the media type from a side bar.
No worries, it doesn't have to look like Netflix :)
