More subtitles providers

Post by Slice314 » 22 Mar 2018, 22:28

Hello guys,

I have been experiencing some difficulties using opensubtitules.org lately, I can't find any results (the login is correct) The thing is that, if i try to search them on the website, I don't have any problems at all finding results... something must be messed up with the api again... (it works randomly depending on the day? cant say for sure)

...and the alternative doesn't give me much options language wise... we speak few different languages at home so subtitles are a must.

Is there any possibility to increase the number of subtitles providers? I normally use opensubtitles but it would be nice to have a backup provider with a wide spectrum of languages to search. "Subscene" comes to my mind... I’m sure there are other nice possible additions as well.

Does anyone feels the same?

Thanks

I agree that more options would be nice to have.

Demark and a few others have banned them. The workaround is to set your name server to 8.8.8.8, the google name server.

The problem with adding other Subtitle providers is we refuse to resort to site scraping. That always breaks and is real pain to maintain. Any subtitle side must have some public (and stable) API.

2 issues with that...

1. It’s still scraping the website, no real API ... see “def from_url(cls, url):“ in subscene.py. They change the layout and we are screwed.

2. Gpl3 code that we cant use, we should have to rewrite it to do exactly that... scrape the site

I played these games in my XBMC/Kodi days and it’s not fun... once they figure out we are doing it they will just rename few items and we are screwed... not to mention it’s against the site rules and more importantly.... no add revenue for them as you are not visiting the www in your browser :)

So, as it stands, we have opensubtitles and podnapisi where we have an arrangement with the site owners/webmasters to use the api ... if more sites are needed we would need the same arrangement with those.

If memory serves me well, we could not get any more “approved” sites into Kodi while I was there, but we opened addons to users so they could create their own in any way they liked.... which in MrMC we obviously can’t do.

I didn’t know it was such a complex thing to do  Thanks for the explanations, let’s hope for more APIs in the future then

Yep, thanks for looking in to the subscene api!
