So back to the topic at hand. What's the latest with the Plex transcoding work? Last thing I asked about was if AAC quality could be improved since it seems (at least for tvOS) it wasn't possible to direct stream some audio codecs from Plex.
DirectPlay, of course works for those audio codecs (that's with transcoding turned off).
I'm guessing AAC quality is chosen by a quality factor and not a bitrate? This makes sense because the bitrate depends on the number of channels contained. If so, and if 1.0 is the max quality, I'd choose something like 0.9. That's just my opinion. I'm betting default quality factor is 0.5.
changes since 3.0.0 (170125.1503)
- fixed, plex client. double start when transcoding.
- fixed, vc1 playback on some flavors.
- fixed, dvd playback with previews before main menu.
- fixed, 3d -> 2d mono
- fixed, crash when going home and updating home shelf

still need to look at EAC3 on tvOS. testing with the hd-dvd test files (which you got from me via dropbox) EAC3 is glitchy. But, plays just fine on shield. I've tested with transcoding on and off. Either way, audio is direct streamed. Is the apple tv just not capable of playing EAC3?
the double start when transcoding seems to be fixed.
